Raquel Vargas-Whale MD, MS, MSc, FAAP
Board Certified Child Abuse Pediatrician

Raquel Vargas-Whale is an Attending Physician for the CARE (Child Abuse Resource & Evaluation) Team at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, TX, joining CPSST in 2015. Dr. Vargas-Whale graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch medical school in 2005, and completed her pediatric residency in 2008 at The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.  After graduation, Dr. Vargas-Whale served as an Indian Health Services Scholar and staff pediatrician for the Choctaw Nation Health Service Authority in Oklahoma. Her practice emphasis was in the area of behavioral health and child development.  In 2012, Dr. Vargas-Whale entered into fellowship training in Child Abuse Pediatrics at The University of Utah and Obtained a Masters degree in Clinical Science Investigation, graduating in July 2015.  Dr. Vargas-Whale is Board Certified in General Pediatrics and Child Abuse Pediatrics.

She is a member of the Ray E. Helfer Society, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and member of American Indian Science and Engineering Society. Her research interests are in the areas of intimate partner violence and child maltreatment with special attention to Indian Health Systems. Dr. Vargas-Whale was awarded a career development research grant by the Ray E Helfer Society in 2014 to study medical provider experiences with child maltreatment reporting at a tribal healthcare facility.

Dr. Vargas-Whale is proud to be an enrolled member of The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Her mother is Choctaw and her father is Quechua of the highland tribes in the Peruvian Andes, South America. She is fluent in Spanish.
