Pathologists analyze tissue that has been processed onto a slide. Pathologists work closely with the surgery department. Tissue are analyzed on a routine basis but can be analyzed on a STAT basis when frozen sections are performed. Frozen sections of tissue are processed and resulted within minutes of sample receipt. In addition to routine histology and frozen sections, Pathologists perform cytologic interpretations on body fluid specimens as well as interpretations on peripheral blood and bone marrow samples.
Another service available through Driscoll Children’s Hospital Pathologists is consultation for performance of pediatric autopsy. Autopsies are done as requested by either the family or the physician. Coordination with nursing service as well as with the Medical Examiner’s office is necessary when autopsies are requested because it is a State requirement that all deaths of children under the age of 6 years be reported to the Medical Examiner’s office.
Driscoll Children’s Hospital Pathologists are skilled offering more than 38 years of combined experience in Anatomic & Pediatric Pathology. Dr. Van H. Savell and Lisa M. Sutton perform pediatric autopsy for children of all ages. The “On Call” pathologist can be contacted via the hospital operator at (361) 694-5000.
